<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I think of the shallow space appearing inside the edges of my paintings as a place to be occupied - a space to fall into. Characters sometimes reach into the frame, or in my imagining, wait just beyond its edge. When a painting is complete, I want this space to appear as if cut from a wider world, but existing only with the acute focus of a portrait - like a stage littered with props after the play has ended and the cast has disappeared behind the curtain. Surreal and abstracted elements enter into this space, sometimes conforming to image’s compositional framework like elements in a poster or magazine cover, and sometimes resting in the staged space as if deflated or spent. Larger paintings sometimes take the form of many smaller paintings in antique frames interconnected to create one large image - the frames functioning as a screen providing a view into a parallel world.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #010101; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px;">Sarah Trigg exhibits recent paintings and sculptures in her solo exhibition, First Landings Between Undetected Earths which opens Friday October 4, 2019 from 6-9 pm at ADA Gallery in Richmond, Virginia. After spending several years intermittently traveling the country visiting artists in their studios for what would become the book, Studio Life: Rituals, Collections, Tools, and Observations on the Artistic Practice, Trigg returned to her studio to find her paint had dried inside their jars. Inspired by the pigments and material nature of this evolution, Trigg found her new process which she now considers “geological—an ecosystem of building up sedimentary layers of paint often bearing the mark making of past acts”. The colors and textures found in these works are reminiscent of pottery found at the site of an unearthed ancient civilization. Trigg found a transformative direction with these new tools and began reworking older paintings as she began her transition from painting to sculpture—a medium native to her practice but now with distinctively unique processes. Hovey Brock at The Brooklyn Rail says that Trigg’s work “combine(s) a painter's command of color and surface with a sculptor's penchant for innovative shapes and materials.
Spratley confronts, and deliberately problematizes, the interpretative gaze, putting the viewer who is unfamiliar with his images into the space of the Other.

Spratley’s new works are dense, immediately gripping, and characteristically layered. Anger and alienation saturate his canvases, whether in the form of abstract rays from a model’s eyes or, more viscerally, the barrels of guns pointed straight at you.
New Work includes new pigmented resin pieces, the mold for which are former food containers. With these, Clark finds the ordered elegance in a humdrum shape, bestowing it with the sleekness of an LCD screen and the enticing translucence of a Jolly Rancher. Please do not lick the art.
Twenty years after People of Color gave up on wypipo and left the planet to explore the cosmos, the enigmatic genetic disease revitiligo expresses itself amongst every yt on earth, imperiling whiteness. With no known cure, the remaining terrestrial nations of North America face unprecedented national turmoil as wypipo begin to develop dark skin pigmentation. President Maura Gardener of the Coastal Union of Civic States and President Ronald Tiller of the Confederate Disaffiliation of States concurrently declare a state of emergency for the countries they lead. A combined forces military operation between the Confederate Disaffiliation of States and the Coastal Union of Civic States is launched to search for Aryanness in Other Places. Scouts from both the CD of S and the CU of CS conduct a joint expedition in the polar ice caps of Monument Valley, where reports of monstrous people being sighted in the savage south have emerged...”

<div class="container-fluid" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 0px auto; padding: 0px 15px;">

Fascinated with thermal imagery and preoccupied by Christian iconography, Chisom conjures images that are both warm and chilling, akin to a pietà surveilled by a U.S. Army drone. Much of his work examines the ways in which Whiteness and Christianity have colonized the lives and sublimated the suffering of People of Color.

As its title indicates, “The Ghost of White Presidents Yet to Come” continues these themes. In these paintings, Chisom composes a sci-fi epic in which PoC have abandoned a dying Earth to explore the universe. As some of the remaining “wypipo” begin to develop darker pigmentation, their governments declare a state of emergency and send an expedition to the polar ice caps and Monument Valley in search of “Aryanness in other places.” Chisom’s ghostly figures float through a world of melting ice and societal decay that viewers may find hauntingly familiar. If the spectral landscapes and desperate faces – or postures, where there are no faces – don’t make it clear enough, Chisom has noted that these scenes are from “the final year of the Christian era.” It’s the end of the world, or at least the end of the world as “yts” know it.

While at Cooper Union, Chisom received the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation Award for Exceptional Ability. After completing his BFA, he received his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. His work has been displayed at numerous group shows, including at JTT Gallery, Signal Gallery, and Abrons Art Center. He has been featured in New American Painters (Issue 134), Forbes Magazine, Artnet, and Artsy.

My new pieces have been inspired by my ever-shifting relationship to Silicon Valley. Using local corporate architecture and all the aspirations and attitudes it embodies, as a jumping-off point, I've been experimenting with a variety of structural systems in small-scale sculptures. With these modular structures I aim to convey a sense of the limitless ambition and “fake it tilll you make it” optimism of startup-culture– a striking counterpoint to the forced exodus of many longtime residents of the region. I intend for these pieces to serve as subjective, abstract distillations of my interpretations of the Silicon Valley zeitgeist.

Bruce Wilhelm's 2007 lithograph, "Multiple Histories", will be added to 15 YRS! Everybody in the Pool for the third and final iteration of this exhibition on Friday August 3rd, 2018. Check out his bio below:

Born and currently working in Richmond VA, Bruce Wilhelm earned his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004 and his MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. He has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs from coast to coast over the last ten years, and was most recently featured in the Untitled Art Fair Miami in December of 2017. His solo exhibitions include NEXT and Paintings/Props/Intermediaries at ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA), Humor Me at Mulherin+Pollard (New York, NY), and Friends of Painting at Eleanor Harwood Gallery (San Francisco, CA). Wilhelm’s work has also been in group shows with ADA Gallery, Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, PA), Fort Worth Drawing Center (Fort Worth, TX), Nudashank (Baltimore, MD), and Projekt722 (Brooklyn, NY).

A two-time recipient of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship for painting in 2004 and 2006, Wilhelm has also been awarded with the Pew Wish List Award and the Trawich Prize, and he is a Fallon and Rosof JC Reynal Finalist. He is also the cofounder of the artist collective Grizzly Grizzly, which began in 2009 as a space for innovative work without the constraints of institutional agendas or commercial interests.

Wilhelm’s most recent five-foot abstract canvases embody new experiments in play and playfulness, as he explains, “the arts’ most important contribution since the renaissance is its openness, its exploration, its counter-culture—its non-compliance. I embrace this. I’m a painter, but I’m here to explore painting and what it means to be a painter in 2018.” Range and playfulness are apparent in these pieces, but so is a sense of structured deliberateness; these explorations work to establish an intimate relationship with the medium and the world they inhabit.
Two of Robert Otto Epstein's deconstructionist sculptural works have been featured for the duration of ADA's Summer 2018 Exhibition, 15 YRS! Everyone in the Pool. Pictured here is his work, "5k$16%£d$!27&9t", 2018 (19 x 19 x 3 inches). Check out Robert's bio below:

Born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1979, Robert Otto Epstein earned a BA in Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Pittsburgh (1998), and studied law at the University of Durham in the UK (2000-1). He has shown widely in the US and Europe: The Hole (New York); The Drawing Center (New York); Ada Gallery (Richmond, VA); Roberts Projects (Los Angeles); Jeff Bailey Gallery (Hudson, NY); Jack Hanley Gallery (New York); Mulherin + Pollard (New York); Morgan Lehman Gallery (New York); The University of Hawaii (Manoa); 99 Cent Plus (Brooklyn, NY); Hemphill Fine Arts (Washington D.C.); Pierogi Gallery (Brooklyn); Geoffrey Young Gallery (Great Barrington, MA); LIU Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY); Voorkamer Gallery (Lier, Belgium); Hionas Gallery, (New York); Kenise Barnes Fine Art (Larchmont, NY) Harbor (New York, NY).

ROE has been featured in: The New York Times, VICE, ELLE Magazine, L Magazine, Juxtapoz, The Wild Magazine, The Jealous Curator, Design Sponge, The Chronogram, The New Criterion, Pattern Pulp, Little Paper Planes, and Dwell Studio. Epstein’s work is in the corporate collections of Facebook, The Big Human, and Fidelity Investments, Oscar Health to name a few. Epstein has curated several exhibitions in NYC. ROE currently lives and works just outside of New York City.

Inspired by deconstructionist philosophy and design, Robert Otto Epstein’s drawings, paintings and sculptural works meditate upon the subversion of meaning. His works exist as metaphors for systems of cognition and production, as he states, “Through my work I explore the way that repetitiveness is structured into discrete forms that are shaped by the prototype, which become the pattern, which become the system, which is itself repeating.” Using these reductive imageries, Epstein’s work incites viewers to contemplate the building blocks of concept and life systems.

Kyle Falzone recently joined the ADA family of gallery artists this year. Pictured here is his painting, "Fingies, Wigglers and Wood" (73 1/2 x 49 x 2 1/4 inches), 2018. Check out his bio below:

Kyle Falzone is a Richmond-based artist who earned his BFA in Sculpture + Extended Media from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2017. Falzone’s sculptures and paintings have been presented with ADA Gallery (Richmond, VA) in the group shows Dusk, Fine Line and 15 YRS! Everyone in the Pool, as well as at the 2017 Untitled Art Fair (Miami, FL). As a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship recipient, his work was featured in the VMFA Fellowship Winners exhibition at Floyd Center for the Arts Hayloft Gallery (Floyd County, VA). His work has also been in the exhibitions Keep on Trucking at Anderson Gallery (Richmond, VA), New Works at CR4 (Richmond, VA), Game On: Sports in Ancient and Modern Art at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center (Newport News, VA) and Your Ticket Out at Distillery Gallery (Boston, MA).

He has been featured in the publications the Daily Press, RVA Magazine and The Boston Globe. Falzone has been awarded the Charles Renick Scholarship, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Undergraduate Fellowship, and the Art Foundation Award from Juror Dean Daderko.

Round wooden forms and a wonky sense of humor distinguish Kyle Falzone’s work as playful and inviting, while their seamless construction tells also of his intentional precision in craftsmanship. Crisply painted starbursts and radiating lines pair with organic dark woods in cryptic abstraction with a unique sense of character. Falzone attributes his work’s character to his background in art, construction, and practices in both architectural design and skateboarding.
The Super Dutchess Innoncence Press Release:

Super Dutchess presents Innocence, an exploration of William Blake’s poem “Auguries of Innocence” that intends to examine a borderless, nonhierarchical ecology through a two-part exhibition curated into works of dark and light. Blake utilized innocence as a subversive political engine for timely, cultural re-evaluation. With “To see a World in a Grain of Sand,” Blake was able to set up a series of statements bordering on vajrayana that can simultaneously entertain the micro and the macro. Interiority and accident are conflated with cosmic scales, examined fresh without presupposed judgment.

Rotation I (Light):

Carved out of wood is a woman with hooved feet resting her elbow on an axe. She is sitting on a pedestal that still has the caps of mushrooms growing on its side. Her feet rest on a human skull and it is unclear whether she is protecting it or displaying it like a trophy for us. She is a confused ecology, an indecipherable blend of human and nature, who’s loyalty to humankind seems ambiguous. Morgan Herrin’s Boudica is an apocryphal imagining of an almost recognizable lore.

Behind her is a painting of a textureless body, downloaded from the internet, executed in traditional technique by Emma Stern. The content of horny coders, she is an open source body without skeleton that is infantilized and overly sexual. Stern breathes life and charm into this fleshless girl; she indulgently rests on the bed, confrontational and refusing to disappear.

To the right, Greg Ito has painted a scene through a locked window of a sailboat heading towards the smoke stacks of a distant shore.

In the top of the space, Blake-like Gnosticism by the Woodstock troubadour Paul McMahon
hangs. A small diptych of an angel and a demon, inverted and flipped but still side by side. It is impossible to miss their similarity.

Rotation II (Dark):

Paul McMahon ’s piece still remains high above in the space. A blown up facsimile of a pulp comic book page hangs on the back wall. It is a painting by B ernard Martin, startling in its illusion. Allegorical and didactic, it is a moment of philosophy in an unusual format. Within this simple, narrative format, we learn to understand the circle of life and death in a comic book almost impossible to imagine.

To its left is a small painting by A na Milenkovic, an image of Poseidon considering a piece of coral. The god considers its creation, perhaps taken aback by its beauty and forgetting his hand in making it. To the right is a painting of a locked window, a candle sitting on its ledge. Within Greg Ito ’s scene, now a nocturne, it is impossible to tell if the rising smoke is from the candle inside or from the ominous, industrial island across the sea.
