I love the shot with George's childhood friend and star, Larry Liebowitz and his mother Francis at the keyboards. I've enjoyed spending time w/ Larry since meeting him a few years ago at George's opening at our space in NYC. We went and grabbed Thai food afterwords, they got the same thing, from the dessert to the soup. Larry mentioned films that he made as well, and the fun times he had projecting films at his house with George and his brother Mike. I saw George again at the Lincoln Center for a tribute evening of George's films, and we shared the incredulousness of our situation without George. I've had a blast reviewing old films of George's, one fun side project is watching the development of Larry over the years! all the hairdo's. and the make-out scenes that George gave him with all the scantily clad starlets.
I'm sure he thanked George often.

Reminds me that my show with George at Mulherin + Pollard in 2010 was entitled Always and Forever, and George reminded me that he had a film Forever & Always, so that was a fitting title for his show.
Well George, this is really forever.

Looks as if George is wondering about what this means to be in The Whitney Biennial..

actually he was "acting" for me in his San Francisco apartment back in 2009.

I must confess, I have pangs of sadness and disbelief every time I see a photo of George. I just long to be with him again or at least be able to pick up the phone & hear his voice. I loved how he ended every call, "Bye Now". I don't think this will ever change.

George knew of the wonderful recognition that was headed his way, the PS1 show, The Whitney, and was sad that he wasn't going to be around to see them.. as he said, "it's a tragedy". But he was very proud, and happy that all these kudos were in the works.

George would have absolutely loved the show at PS1 with it's 30 plus films on view, either projected or on monitors in a sit-down setting, as well as all the drawings, paintings and comics that they included. Complete with red carpet!!

If you haven't seen the show go now to PS1 , it's up through January 15.

I think this is George reading the blog above and thinking, "ooh John, You're getting mushy!"

Yeah, well. Whatcha going to do.

Jimmy Trotter created this cave of drawings from over 100 slightly damaged drawings rescued from the floor of his studio in Missouri and sent to NYC for his exhibit, "The Sweetest Kill". Actually many of the drawings weren't so badly damaged after all, but were ultimately sacrificed.

We will never forget you George.

Here I am shooting a bit of video of George during Art Basel week 2009 which he made into a diary, Artstar. I can't believe George is gone. George was my professor, my artist and my friend of 23 years. I met George the fall of 1989 when I moved to San Francisco to attend SFAI. His class was called AC/DC Psychoteleplays. or Psychotropics.. i can't remember exactly but it sounded more fun than Painting 2 or Life Drawing. and it was. In fact, I like many others, couldn't stop "taking his class". During grad school for painting and beyond, I kept finding myself hanging out at Studio 8. I'm happy to have been one of George's many"actors".
And now, having been George's art dealer for the past few years, I can't tell you how much fun we've had together. And I'm so proud of the wonderful exhibitions that we have coming this year and next, which fortunately he knew about, He was very excited and proud of what was happening with his drawings and paintings.
Oh man, I'm so sad. We will miss you George. Always & Forever.

George Kuchar & Jimmy Trotter will be exhibiting new work (and in George's case some new & old work - old but never before seen ) at NADA Miami. We are very excited to be accepted to this years NADA fair. I must tell you that I was so excited for several reasons.. Jimmy is from Miami so I'm looking forward to exhibiting his toy shrines and paintings in his hometown while learning the best places to eat & get cuban coffee, etc..

and I couldn't wait to tell George that I had a room for him on the beach. A couple of years ago, I booked us all a room together on the Bay and George politely asked me to move him over to the beachfront... "It's kinda crazy to come all the way to Miami and not be on the beach, isn't it?" he kept telling me when he suggested that i stay a few days post fair.

Needless to say, I knew he'd be thrilled with our situation this year with a room on the beach.

So it saddens me to tell the Ada gallery family that though his artwork will be with us, unfortunately George won't be able to make it to Miami. George has had cancer for awhile now and it seemed, and we all hoped, that it was under control or at least slowed, but it's come back rather quickly and aggressively. I hoping that George & I will be able to see Miami on skype or at least, I can hold the phone to his ear while near the surf.

To all the many friends & fans of George & Mike, please keep them in your prayers.

Okay, this isn't a new sculpture and no, i'm not giving any food away at my openings, or have i gone corporate and sought out a sponsor.. but i feel suddenly like blogging..

I'm so excited to be in the new space in the Lower East Side (end of Freeman Alley at Rivington) and search out all the good food in the area. So far, I've had great taco's at the Corner Diner, almost as good tacos at nearby Mexican place (forgot the name)

but today i was blown away by a fantastic Vietnamese sandwich at SAIGON on Broome & Mott. and only FIVE bucks! Bread as fine comes only from Paris. okay, i'm exaggerating.. but, man oh man, it was amazing.

Bovasso's acrylic and ink drawings feature densely constructed, intricately woven abstraction, rich in color and finely executed lines.

Now sprouting legs and feet appropriated from the human form, Disney and Breughel, these anthropomorphized, architectural shapes are transformed into a hybrid of humanness and mobile apparatuses. Film icon George Kuchar painted this incredible watercolor, Albino Amazon, in 1977. Ada gallery participated in this years Volta NY featuring George's paintings and drawings as well as photography and comic works. Happily, We sold this piece, as well as "The Jersey Devil" which was an equally spectacular painting from 1980. Also recent drawings of his cat Tippy & a self portrait entitled "Fantasy Hovel" which was created in El Reno, Oklahoma, George's summer excursion into Tornado Alley.. where this year George was closer than he wanted to be when a large tornado hit El Reno. Luckily George's motel was spared.

George described "Albino Amazon" as a woman "of Science and a woman of jungle intellect clash against the turbulence of exotica". I love that the jungle lady is wearing an octopus skirt and red pumps. just as you'd expect. See more of George's art work here....

Richmonder's might remember the name Rosemarie Fiore having seen her work in many shows over the years at Ada Gallery. Her ceramic sculptures of Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner doing battle amongst grand desert panoramas was pretty unforgettable. or her Firework drawings or her Gun Rubbings or her Scrambler project (ada helped fund this project which was exhibited at Grand Arts in KC, MO) Well, the fireworks artwork won out over her many action mediums used over the years, from lawnmower to amusment park rides, and to great effect. Her old work is fantastic as always, but in this new work Rosemarie is now speaking fluently in the language that she's created. GO see her current show at Priska Juschka Fine Art.

We're keeping our eyes peeled for the brilliant Cindy Sherman, a collector of Jared's work and a fan of ADA!

Jared Clark’s varied and idiosyncratic art practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, collage and video, playfully transgressing the boundaries between these modes of production. While the act of making is performed explicitly in Clark’s time-based work, there is a lingering suggestion of performance threaded throughout his oeuvre.

Clark’s ‘bilds’ are constructed from materials that are both familiar and odd - cutting boards, luggage, soap, craft paintings, ceramic figurines, map pins, painted rocks, Styrofoam, fruit, and glass - and appear to be simultaneously carefully constructed, balanced and casual. Whether fixed in place with adhesives, or stacked between trees, there is a sense that these structures are provisional, a pause in an ongoing, mutating, stream of creation.

Clark approaches history as a material, and much like the objects he picks up and manipulates, it is transformed through his deft touch. His elegant mash-up of minimalism, action painting and pop art shows a striking grasp of color and form, and his delight in materiality is conveyed equally through his use of natural substances, manufactured objects, the old and the new.

Clark’s sculptures and wall pieces are like small islands, gatherings of ceramic figurines and other thrift-store objects huddled together. The poured resin joining them serves as both base and picture plane, confounding our expectations of front and back, or top and bottom. Through his work, Clark pokes at our assumptions, encouraging us to reconsider both art history and theeveryday. His actions, and the objects that he offers, are a liberating force that are sure to delight with their invitation that the world can be remade.

Here's a photo of George Kuchar being interviewed by the group from Artlog. Asked if he had any advice, "you loose your buttocks as you get older. So be sure to eat plenty and don't listen to your friends if they say they your butts too big. it can never have too big a buttocks". Oh Georgie. What would the world be without you. What kinds of films would John Waters, Todd Solondz, and pals have made without you. We were very happy to have sold several of George's watercolors to collectors who didn't even know about George's illustrious film (and underground comics career)! Which i just love. Not that we wouldn't want to sell his works to film fans! George also gave a fantastic talk with critic Ed Halter which was sponsored by the Armory Show. Ed & George bantered back and forth, George even told his Charlie Sheen story. Good stuff. More posts to come.

Our Knight has been causing quite a scene in the Chelsea neighborhood: cabbies are stoping to stare, people are smashing their faces onto our window, cars come to a screeching halt!! All to see the giant piece!
The Untitled Knight, by Herrin pays hommage to the famous sculpture, The Dying Gaul. His previous works, which have sold to biker-extroidanaire Lance Armstrong, have also spoken to classical antiquity. A gallery guest today dubbed our knight as therepresentation of wooden-neoclassicim.

Make sure you stop by to see the piece, these pictures do not give it the justice it deserves!

Meticulously hand-carved wood sculpture is a rare commodity these days, but Dallas born and Richmond based artist Morgan Herrin successfully creates stunning work using laudable skills and a distinctive, surprising style by creating these masterpieces from construction grade 2x4's. Herrin's sculptures demand the better part of a year to create, and his newest piece is no exception. With this considerable investment & devotion given to each piece, Herrin is able to reach a level of detail and sophistication not typically found in wood sculpture.

"Untitled (Knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor, and geological cave structure. Studied separately, these two subjects are completely unrelated. The manmade geometric precision of plate armor is formally opposite of the flowing, organic stalactites and stalagmites. Seen together, these two parts present a striking contrast in form and create a theme of time and the effects of nature. The pose of the figure and the general composition are references to the classical sculpture "The Dying Gaul" of ancient Roman antiquity. Rendered entirely in laminated construction-grade 2 by 4s, the material itself irreverently contradicts this classical allusion, and at the same time draws attention to our own culture's reliance on the fast, cheap, and impermanent." - Morgan Herrin

Incredible works at The Folk Art Museum in NYC!

I can't believe I've never been there before... I'm always driving to ny to pickup/drop off work without time for museums. But I finally i got to the Folk Museum. such great works are there.. This painting is "Watergate" by Ralph Fasanella. You can stare at this beautiful, inventive piece for hours ( it was right beside a painting of Richmond from the 1800's). So this piece and the Dargers were my favorites. Specifically the two sided painting by Henry Darger blew my mind. painting #1, the Glandelinians, these soldier/cowboy guys are tying up and choking young girls in the forest.. a frightening painting, then on the flipside, painting #2 ,UNTITLED (Blengins Capturing Glandelinian Soldiers), the tortured are rescued as the winged children "the Blengins" fly in and chase off, capture or kill these fleeing cowboys. really amazing. My other favorite pieces in really no particular order:

BOATLANDIA and Gian Pierotti set sail!!

Current VCU Crafts grad, Gian Pierotti will set off down the James RIver aboard his CERAMIC!! vessel BOATLANDIA.
In his own words,
"As some of you know I have built a terra cotta boat to float down the James river with me inside. My future is unknown. The vessel and her sea worthiness is unknown. My destination is unknown. Please come and witness Boatlandia and her maiden voyage."
Gian's expedition occurs this Saturday morning (the 17th) at 10:00 am. He will launch his boat at the Osborn boat ramp which is about a 5 minute drive from Richmond.

This is one of the wall installations of John Coburn's auto/vehicle inspired works. These are beautiful paintings usually on MDF using enamel & oil paint. Seeing a work inspired by a Pinto... takes me back to brown bag lunches and carpooling!
Stop by ADA gallery in Richmond, Virginia and see these guys in person. We're now, rather comically, open 7 days a week on Broad, after almost never being there.. We got faked out by a sale of our building on Broad (which ended up being tabled due to economy) and we found a new space. We readied ourselves for the move when we were told we could stay in the old place!
So our old address on Broad St. is back to being our main exhibition space. And we now enjoy the new Main St. space as storage, office, and more.

One of the last times, if not the last time that Jack played in Richmond was at ADA gallery. He did a solo acoustic set back in May of 2004. I'm going to search my huge file of photos and find a picture from that night. In the meantime, this is a photo of Jack Rose with his 1990's band Uglyhead. This Thursday, September 24th, I will create a monumental sculpture from 3,615 pounds of second hand clothing. The resulting piece will be a 5 x 7 foot cube, carefully folded, stacked and arranged by color. Why 3,615 pounds? That's the amount of textile waste created by New Yorkers every 5 minutes. This event, hosted by the Council on Environment of New York City, will be part of the 5th Annual Green Brooklyn...Green City Fair and Symposium taking place on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at Brooklyn Borough Hall and Columbus Park. Clothing for the event will be loaned by the textile recycling company, Wearable Collections.
I'm looking for people who like to fold, have reasonable attention to detail, and can commit to a half day or more. Spread the word!!
Compensation: 1) Fold the whole day and you will be compensated with an original, framed watercolor by the artist commemorating the event 2) Everyone will be fed 3) You will receive a $10 travel stipend. Please let me know if you plan to come, and wear blue on the bottom and white on the top, Adam Kaufman will be making a mini-doc, so that will make us look great. Or like a cult, which would be fun too.

This work by Shannon Wright is inspired by Afghan war rugs and Shannon's take on our current war. Shannon made a rubber "re-tread" for our Scope Miami show last year based on this drawing ( this is just a detail). Side note: Shannon's sister Kylie and I were in a band at UVa called FlushPet. Being an animal lover and a bit of a weenie, I wasn't initially a fan of the name... Kylie had to explain to me the ways of punk rock.

Jared Clark busts out new work & some recently revamped old work in a show called LOVE & DEVOTION. and Jeremy Drummond presents some of his photographic works in group called NOWHERE. South Dakota is a newly mounted beautiful 7 image piece which shows opposite some of his Street Signs pulled from an ongoing series called Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere. More images to come soon!

George Kuchar amidst a very fun & informative Q & A at Scope NY last March ( I'm the one with the goofy look of love n' admiration!). We were showing new and old work at "Video Violations" in Scope Art's video and film area. We also had some drawings by George in the booth. George was my professor back at SFAI many moons ago, so it's always fun to see him & equally great to work with him again! Look for cool new stuff from George & ADA this Miami!!!

Baby Boom by Nathan Tersteeg showing this month (august 09) at ada gallery. This is one from a series of five in which each bat is clutching a dvd. The Bats are drawn in pitch black charcoal and the dvd's are painted in acrylic (maybe gouache). Nathan's statement reads, "In these images, I am both embodied in and haunted by small specters of night, spooked or screeching as I clutch at false hopes and cling to dark fantasies." Did I mention the paintings on the dvd's are so tight? very fine detail work. So much so that when we showed his previous series of Octopi paintings, who were holding on to bags of chips or soda and such, someone actually thought he had magically shrunk the label off of a 2 liter bottle of root beer and glued it onto the painting! Nope, just good painting.

Derick Melander in NY TIMES today!!

Derick Melander (exhibited with ADA gallery at Scope Miami last year and in Richmond this past May) is currently exhibiting at the Katonah Museum of Art and has just been reviewed by the New York Times in The Style Section (print) and in The Moment (blog). Both reviews include a photo of Derick's piece, which is titled "Where do you Begin". This sculpture, nearly 12 feet tall, is comprised of carefully folded, women's clothing and dates back to '03. Get there and see this piece!!! (show ends October 4th).

Roberto Jamora : ada gallery residency program 2009 !

Virginia Beach artist, Roberto Jamora exhibited some of his recent silkscreen prints which involve water, surfers, spiritual rocks and volcanoes in our Stimulus Package show this past July. Roberto was the first ever ada gallery assistant /residential artist this summer. When not answering the door for gallery visitors, Roberto was participating in ADA gallery's Broad Street Residency Program! We cleared out the office and voila! studio!! MARC SNYDER & FIMP BOOKS at ADA GALLERY !

FIMP BOOKS ( MARC SNYDER) joined the group last month for ada's STIMULUS PACKAGE show.

I must disclose for the record that I was in an extremely mysterious & occasionally maligned co-ed fraternity with Mr.Marc Snyder at The Univ. of Virginia back in the day... The Art Department, silly !
His band, The Squealing Undulations, always had the catchiest posters all around school with the most arresting image w/ tiny print underneath the club & time saying " not appearing tonight". No one seemed to notice. My friends thought he was in a band. More people see posters than go to shows anyways.
The hilarity continues with his FIMP ( Fuji Island Mermaid Press) art books. Go to Fimp.net
and click on "art books".Tell Marc " John from ADA sent you" and maybe he'll give you a free one when you buy a bunch. maybe not. doesn't matter. they're so cheap & genius that you should just go there now & order them. Order them ALL ! (We also carry them at ADA gallery)

Update: Marc says the band is gearing up for their big reunion non-tour.

I seem to have a thing for putting up images from previous shows! But I figure if you're in Richmond.. you should just come by the gallery , and if you're out of town , does it matter? probably... so, I'll try to add the present & the future to the mix!
This woodblock print is by a young Pennsylvania artist, Jeremiah Johnson. This piece was shown in last months group exhibit STIMULUS PACKAGE at ada. Jeremiah is a painter, printer, installation artist & more. He even has an alter ego. Like Sir Able Brown of Brooklyn , Not only is he an original, I'm quite positive he's cool. It's not crucial for good art, but it really helps. More to come.
